Halls with Heart – Broken Hill

The Y Women Hall in Broken Hill recently hosted a series of guided meditation sessions as part of the Halls with Heart project. Led by wellbeing practitioner Rachel Hill, the sessions offered a calm and supportive environment where participants could pause, reconnect, and focus on their mental wellbeing.

Broken Hill based RAMHP Coordinator, Marisa said engagement was strong throughout with many attendees choosing to stay well beyond the scheduled finish time, taking the opportunity to continue conversations, reflect on their experience or simply enjoy the peaceful environment.

Participant Kelly Finch shared her reflections with us on what her local hall meant to her growing up:

I grew up near the remote opal mining community of White Cliffs, in outback NSW.

At the heart of our main street stands the town hall, a large, unassuming building with iron exterior walls and beautiful timber floors. It may not be the most striking at first glance, but it holds something far more important: heart, soul, and a lifetime of memories. A place where there is a chair for everyone.

This is where New Year’s Eve celebrations stretched well beyond midnight, carrying on until the sun rose the next day. Where milestone birthdays are marked with live music, dancing, laughter, and children playing outside on the playground into the early hours. It’s where the entire community gathers for fundraisers, wool days, rallies, and auctions, each event bringing people closer together.

In the kitchen, locals work side by side, plating up food and treats for hundreds. Every child in the district remembers toy library days, when the hall comes alive with toys, music, and arts and crafts.

From the joy of weddings to the sorrow of funerals, the town hall has held us all. A place where people come together in both celebration and grief. It is shared ground, where opal miners, tourists, publicans, teachers, and graziers meet, connect, and belong.

It is more than a function room. More than a building that quietly waits.

It is a space for everyone. A room filled with decades of memories, and many more still to be made.
