Milton Showground has long been a central gathering place for the local community, with the annual show dating back to the late 19th century. Agricultural shows like Milton’s were originally established to showcase livestock, farming practices, and local produce, but over time they have evolved into much broader community events that reflect the identity and character of the region.
At the heart of the showground sits the main pavilion hall. This space has hosted everything from agricultural competitions and exhibitions to community meetings, performances, social events, along with serving as a gathering place when the community is impacted by disaster.
More than just infrastructure, the hall and showground that surrounds it represent continuity — a place where traditions are maintained, stories are shared, and community identity is reinforced.
The Milton Show provided a clear and practical demonstration of the Halls with Heart approach in action, highlighting the critical role local halls play in the social fabric of rural communities.
Nowra based RAMHP Coordinator, Jamie said the show created a natural environment for engagement, allowing conversations around mental health and wellbeing to occur in a way that felt informal, accessible, and relevant to the community.
RAMHP’s presence at the show was designed to fit in with what was already happening, rather than feel separate from it. It wasn’t about setting up something formal; it was about being part of the day. That made it much easier to have genuine conversations, where people are comfortable, and engaged in the space.
