In recent times many people have been experiencing financial stress across rural communities. For primary producers there are not only rising cost of living pressures in the home but also rising business costs, which, if not addressed early can lead to financial stress and mental health concerns.
NSW beef producer, Kristy, highlighted this in conversation with the Rural Adversity Mental Health Program (RAMHP):
“Tell me of any other industry that is purchasing at retail price but expected to sell at wholesale price? That is what’s being asked of us as farmers.”
RAMHP and the Rural Financial Counselling Service (RFCS) have seen firsthand the impact financial stress can have on rural communities, individuals and families.
In response to the growing need for information and support, these organisations have partnered to develop a new resource ‘The real cost of financial stress’.
The resource helps to identify possible signs of financial stress whilst offering strategies that can be implemented to help address financial pressures and increase mental wellbeing.
The message is clear – support is available. It is best to seek help early while there are options for technical, financial and mental health support.
If you’re not sure where to start or want some advice on the best option for you, having a chat to your nearest RAMHP Coordinator can help.
The Rural Financial Counselling Service is a confidential and impartial service specialising in helping primary producers who are at risk of or are in financial distress. For more information visit Northern Region at www.rfcsnr.org.au or Central and Southern Regions at www.rfcsnsw.org.au.
