For 50 years the Sofala Showground Hall has been at the heart of village life. While it is best known as the home of the annual Sofala Show, it is also a place where friendships are formed, milestones are celebrated and generations come together.
Community members describe the Sofala Show Hall as the “centrepiece of our village”, a place that has hosted birthdays, weddings, charity events and community gatherings.
For one local, their fondest memory is “the morning of each show, watching it all come together and seeing the stewards greet each other with a huge hug after a year’s worth of planning and preparation”. Another describes the hall as “a place to meet new people, enjoy the friends we’ve made and create a special event for our village”.
This year the Sofala Show Hall became the setting for another special occasion as community members gathered to celebrate the Sofala Show being named a finalist for the NSW AgShow Community Resilience & Recovery Award.
When unexpected power issues threatened to interrupt the live award announcement, the community spirit that the Sofala Showground Hall helped create once again was demonstrated. In a true example of community spirit, a camper staying at the showground generously offered the use of a generator & Starlink connection so the celebration could continue.
What followed was a simple but meaningful celebration. Neighbours helping neighbours, people working together to overcome challenges and a shared commitment to supporting one another. These are the qualities that continue to strengthen rural communities and contribute to positive mental health and wellbeing.
For RAMHP, the event captured the essence of the Halls with Heart project. It wasn’t the size of the gathering that mattered, but the sense of connection, generosity and community pride that filled the space.
